    Pro’s Corner….

Choose Your Best Shot Every Time

When you hit the ball, do you have a plan for it?  Do you plan the spin, the pace, and the location?  In order to be an intermediate player, you must.  Let us look at a few tips when choosing the location and quality of your shots.

    1.   When in the corners, hit cross court.  The net is lower and there are 9 extra feet to hit the ball on the diagonals.
    2.   If you hit down the line, hit it with force.  If you hit it softly, your opponent will counter with a cross court shot that will keep running away from you.
    3.   When in the center at the baseline, force your partner to move, try hitting to his weakness or hit it in the opposite corner from your previous shot.
    4.   With a short ball, a ball landing in front of your service line, attack to the backhand corner, especially if the ball is not near the sidelines.  If the ball is near the sidelines, think of a short angle or a deep angle to put the ball away; it is most likely to be your last shot of that point.
    5.   Where do you serve to?  For fair to middling players, hit your first serve to the backhand.  If you are up in the game (15-0, 30-0, 40-15), consider hitting a wide angle slice for the ace.  On your second serve, get it in to the middle, and work on trusting yourself to get it to the backhand corner consistently.  As your serve becomes more powerful, a serve at the opponent’s body can be very effective.

Even if you cannot hit the balls accurately enough or hard enough to make the shots above work, practice them at slower speeds.  Play points in slow motion, (no putaways allowed);  they will be soon in your bag of tricks.

When you have general ideas, patterns of tactics, your thinking is simple.  Instead of choosing from a myriad of ideas, you can simply choose, “Go with the pattern.” or try something more risky “Go with the exception.”  Without a plan, you are playing “hit and giggle” tennis; with a plan, you will be getting the most bang for your buck - the biggest trophy for your shelf.
